diarrhoea runs in the family
Aug 31st, 2008 by islandhippy
Sandy: Both Phil and baby Olive have diarrhoea … one of them because of rotavirus (we suspect), the other due to a six-hour drinking binge followed by spicy food and four hours of sleep. Phil has already self-medicated with a bacon, mushroom and poached-egg sandwich but we’re going to have to take Olive to the hospital. We’re worried she might be dehydrated and this is the first time she’s fallen sick. She doesn’t look ill, and she’s not displaying any visible symptoms of dehydration but the diarrhoea hasn’t cleared after two days so something is wrong. It’s a Sunday and no polyclinics are open so we’re about to take her to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, where she was born. I’ll continue the post later.
(Continued ...) Phil: two hours later and S$80 worse off, we returned from the hospital. Olive didn't put on a very convincing show of looking ill, she managed to smile throughout the whole visit. In fact she seemed to have great fun, it was obviously a ruse to get out of the house. Sandy and her sisters, who are visiting, all retired for a siesta in the afternoon so Olive and I decided to take a stroll down to the local pub, Colbar, where we enjoyed a few India Pale Ales before staggering back in the rain. After too many sips of IPA, Olive fell asleep in the baby carrier with her tiny hand clutching the umbrella handle. Very cute.

Glad that Olive has perked up, rotavirus is pretty serious and she would have most likely been sicker than just the runs. (there is a jab for it though that you can get for her below 6 months if you are really worried). Could just be the onset of teething, although most dr.s don’t believe in the connection between teething and diarrhea. But i always found Thalia to have this when teeth were starting to break thru!… well my two cents worth! Hope you are all on the mend! Hugs xx
You’re right, it wasn’t rotavirus. Olive’s only just started putting objects in her mouth — nursery rhyme books, soft toys, bank books, etc — so this was no doubt the cause. Bank books just aren’t as safe to eat as they used to be. So, nothing serious we hope. Olive has had one of two rotavirus jabs so we’re probably worrying unnecessarily. But we’re good at that.
If this happens, stop using and consult your doctor. Baby Carrier
