reunion dinner

On Sunday evening we ushered in the Year of the Ox with Reunion Dinner at Sandy's parent's new house in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Absent with apologies was Sandy's brother, who had to work the following day up in Penang, but present at the table for the first time was baby Olive. I was kind of hoping we might embrace the Year of the Cow with thick slabs of juicy sirloin but we stuck to the Cheah family tradition of fish stomach, sea cucumber, cuttlefish, pig's liver, abalone and fishballs. My favourite.
On the first day of Chinese New Year we decided to explore the new neighbourhood of Cheras/Ampang/Hulu Langat and drove up to Hulu Langat Lookout Point, which is famous for great views of KL and terrible Western food (just see the number of people blogging about the inedible steaks). We checked out the menu and it seemed to offer only Malay food so perhaps it's safe to eat there once more. We didn't have time to sample the fare but it's definitely a place to revisit. Judging by the number of large villas being erected in the area, perhaps this is KL's answer to Melbourne's Dandenongs—a mountain retreat for the well heeled. Unfortunately this is Malaysia so you would be more likely to get Little Genting than Dandenongs.
Happy Lunar New Year to everybody!

I had my first reunion dinner this year in Singapore and it was great.
First feeling a bit uncomfortable because of obviously not being a “real” member of the family, I more then enjoyed it later on!
Well done, you survived your first reunion dinner! Don’t worry about not being a ‘real’ member of the family, the more people who show up for dinner the better. I’ve done twelve reunion dinners now, as friend, boyfriend, fiancé and finally husband. I find alcohol works well. I’m looking forward to my daughter growing up so we can teach her all the customs associated with Chinese New Year.
