summer pubs
Jul 7th, 2009 by islandhippy
Summer has arrived in London. My nephew and godson, Oscar, is relaxing in the garden with a guide to the best summer pubs. Ah ha, I was wondering what to get him for his second birthday ... I think a homebrew beer kit looks in order! Or a breathalyzer.
One of the things I miss most living in Singapore is the British weather ... er, I mean of course the British summer. All two weeks of it. I miss playing tennis (without getting sunstroke), sitting on the grass (without being eaten alive by ants) and sitting outside a pub with a pint of Guinness (sold at a sensible price permitting a second pint, if so desired).
("Rubbish! You still play tennis then go out for lots of beer and collapse drunk on the grass in Singapore!" Sandy)

We’re moving from London to Singapore next month, I’ve loved reading your blog in preparation (beats packing and DIY!) and good to also know what you miss from home; I love pubs, ale and British weather (even when it’s rubbish!) so reckon I’m in for a shock. But plenty of upsides to compensate – thank you for all the insights!
Hi Sarah
Great, give us a shout when you arrive. (We’ll be back in UK end of Aug, early Sept.) Plenty of ale here — you can get Boddington, Old Speckled Hen and local microbrewery beers on draught — for a price. I have been known to knock back the occasional Tiger beer too.
Phil
Hi Phil,
I will, thanks very much! And GREAT news about the ale – Old Speckled Hen one of my favourites! I can definitely cope with Tiger beer too, in fact generally not averse to many alcoholic beverages now I think about it, so should survive, cost aside.
Talking of which, must try and stop the husband buying a pair of expensive looking ski boots online now (think he’s in denial).
Have a great trip to the UK and I’ll drop you a line once we’ve arrived and got our bearings! (Fly out 6th August).
Cheers!
Sarah
